Step by Step Instructions

1.

Thoroughly sweep the entire deck area free from sawdust, sand, mud and other foreign matter that might interfere with good adhesion.

  2. Once flashing and cant strip have been nailed to the deck, fill all T&G plywood joints, nail/screw indentations, surface imperfections, flashing and cant strip interfaces with the RUBBER FILL-IT (3-4 applications will be required or until flush).
  3. Polyester Tape is required for the plywood to flashing and cant strip interfaces. It must be used for the plywood joints. During 2nd application, while the FILL-IT is still wet, embed polyester tape into it. Wait until dry & apply a second coat of FILL-IT over the tape (like drywall). Continue to apply coats of FILL-IT until areas are flush. Roll all taped joints & flashing areas with ROLL-DEK BASE COAT prior to applying the full coats of BASE COAT.

Tip: Rubber Fill-It is designed to shrink. No sanding is required.
Tip: Do not use silicone or a latex based caulking as these are incompatible.

COVERAGE OF ROLL-DEK TEXTURED BASE COAT
NEW SANDED PLYWOOD: Apply Ducan ROLL-DEK BASE COAT at the rate of 2.5 U.S. Gallons per 128 sq. ft. one coat (2 applications are required for new surfaces) and/or 1 U.S. gallon per 64 sq. ft. one coat. NOTE: All coverages are approximate. Actual coverage will depend on surface and porosity of material to be covered. Not recommended over painted, stained or silicone surfaces.  Not for use on vinyl sheet decking. Do not install on pressure treated lumber. K-3 board, particle board and OSB are not recognized as suitable exterior sub-floor materials.

Important: All the material required must be applied.
  4. Thoroughly stir the ROLL-DEK BASE COAT until no sediment remains in the bottom of the container.
  5.

With a brush, paint a full coat of ROLL-DEK BASE COAT around the railing posts and all metal flashing and cant strip and anywhere polyester tape has been applied.

  6. Prepare the roller and attach the extension.
  7.

Using a short nap roller suitable for enamels, fully dip the roller in the ROLL-DEK BASE COAT 2.5 gallon container while making a stirring motion (do this for each pass).

8. Apply the wet roller without heavy pressure to the deck and roll out the material in one direction only, 18” to 24” per roller full only. (Do not roll back and forth.)
  9. Make sure a puddle of ROLL-DEK BASE COAT stays ahead of the roller, this will ensure that the rubber non-skid particles stay evenly distributed. Remember you have to apply a thick, heavy coat.
  10.

Make 3 or 4 passes next to each other, refilling the roller on every pass. The area covered should be approximately 2 x 3 ft. Then lightly roll between the passes to eliminate roller marks. The roller weight alone is sufficient.

11. Important: At the mid-way point in your ROLL-DEK BASE COAT container, you will want to refill it using your other ROLL-DEK BASE COAT container. You should have used just over half the required ROLL-DEK BASE COAT material on your first coat. Let the first application dry. Drying time will vary depending on the surface and outside temperature. Allow at 2 to 4 hours between coats.
12. Start the second application of ROLL-DEK BASE COAT in a different corner and work at right angles to the first application. Repeat steps 4 though 10.

Important: All the material required must be applied. If you find areas with less non-skid coverage, you may add to these areas at any time prior to applying the TOP-COTE Colour Coat.
  13.

You must apply Ducan TOP-COTE Colour Coat as a color/sealer coat.

  14.

Thoroughly stir the TOP-COTE Colour Coat until no sediment remains in the bottom of the container. Intermix the contents of the containers to ensure color uniformity, especially if different batch numbers are being used.

  15. With a brush (suitable for enamels), paint a full coat of TOP-COTE Colour Coat around railing posts and all edges of the deck.
  16.

Prepare the roller and attach the extension.

  17. Using a new short nap roller suitable for enamels, roll out the TOP-COTE Colour Coat at the rate of 80 sq. ft. per 1 U.S. gallon.
  18. Drying time may vary from 2 to 4 hours depending on the surface and temperature. Allow 48 hours to cure, before permitting traffic on the surface and placement of patio furniture. Allow only light traffic for the first 14 days.

Maintenance

To maintain your deck surface, Ducan recommends a re-application of Ducan TOP-COTE Hypalon* Based colour coat every 3 to 4 years. Ducan TOP-COTE Colour Coat is compatible with other Hypalon* and Neoprene* type coatings, ie. ROLL-DEK, Sundex, Tufdek, Spantex, GacoFlex. Make a test patch when in doubt, or use Ducan VINYL-DEK (vinyl/acrylic based re-coating product).

RE-COAT DIRECTIONS

  3. With a brush (suitable for enamels), paint a full coat of Ducan TOP-COTE Hypalon* Based colour coat around railing posts and all edges of the deck.

  4. Prepare the roller and attach the extension.

  5. Using a short nap roller suitable for enamels, roll out the material at the rate of 80 sq. ft. per 1 U.S. gallon.

  6. Drying times may vary from 2 to 4 hours depending on the surface and temperature. Allow 48 hours to cure, before permitting traffic on the surface and placement of patio furniture. Allow only light traffic for the first 14 days.
